Cape Town, 3 July 2024 | Blok, the property developer in Cape Town, has always believed that true urban living goes beyond your front door; it’s about creating spaces that inspire, connect, and uplift. Their latest urban intervention, in partnership with SJ Artists, brings this vision to life with colourful, expressive murals on the Sea Point promenade’s ablution blocks – turning functional structures into canvases for creativity.

Blok’s collaboration with the SJ Artists to paint murals on the ablution blocks along Sea Point promenade is part of a broader vision to transform and elevate public spaces. The transformation of one of Cape Town’s most loved landmarks is a prime example of Blok’s urban interventions, which are designed to enrich community life and foster a sense of pride and ownership in shared spaces. By integrating art into these everyday structures, Blok aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the promenade, creating a vibrant and engaging environment for both residents and visitors.

This initiative not only supports local artists by providing them with a prominent platform to showcase their work but also encourages public interaction with art, making it an integral part of daily life. Through these efforts, Blok is committed to creating a more connected, inspired, and culturally rich community – something the brand does so well with its contemporary Atlantic Seaboard developments.

Following the fun Art on the Blok pop-up gallery, this project perfectly embodies Blok’s commitment to investing in local art and culture and providing a platform for Cape Town’s creative souls.

A Collaborative Vision

SJ Artists is an agency dedicated to supporting and managing mural artists and large-scale art projects. This collaboration is led by Shani Judes, a recognised contributor to Cape Town’s public art scene.

Shani brings invaluable expertise and passion for ocean conservation-themed public art which aligns perfectly with the coastal setting of Sea Point. Her track record includes notable projects like the Wavescape Surf & Ocean Festival and Sea Walls South Africa.

Art at the Heart of City Living

Blok believes in creating homes that connect residents not just to their living spaces but to their broader neighbourhood and community. These murals create new points of interest along the promenade, highlighting themes of ocean conservation and natural beauty – cultivating environmental awareness. SJ Artists have brought together three exceptional artists, each contributing their unique style, creating a diverse visual experience that captures the essence of the city’s artistic spirit. The installation features murals from the below artists:

  • Russell Abrahams, known as Yay Abe, is a Cape Town-based illustrator celebrated for his colourful, playful, and transformative designs. His mural Ocean Daze is a vibrant depiction of a day at the beach, complete with hidden faces for passersby to discover.
  • Amy-Leigh Braaf, known as Hakopike, is a South African artist exploring themes of self-discovery and cultural heritage. Drawing from her mixed Cape Malay and Indonesian heritage, her mural Coastal Lullabies is a visual poem celebrating Cape Town’s marine life and natural beauty.
  • Mika Revell, known as Little Pink Pills, is an Asian-American artist known for her political satire, feminism, and historical art references. Her mural Impossible City, inspired by M.C. Escher, challenges perceptions of urban spaces and prompts viewers to reconsider conventional notions of home and community.

Seeing is Believing

Blok invites the public to experience firsthand how they are reimagining urban spaces, one brushstroke at a time. A stroll along the promenade offers an immersive experience in this open-air gallery where each piece is accompanied by an informative plaque, providing further insights into the artist and their work. Additionally, many other works of art along the promenade are available for enjoyment.

‘MUSIC FOR WILDLIFE’ LAUNCHES ON TRACE GLOBAL NETWORK, HEADLINED BY FOCALISTIC, MUSA KEYS, VINKA, CKAY, AZAWI, DAVIDO AND MANY MORE OF AFRICA’S STARS

CREATIVITY AND CONSERVATION JOIN FORCES IN A POWERFUL NEW MUSIC MOVEMENT

[Cape Town] 20th June 2024

“Music for Wildlife”, a dynamic concert series bringing African artists together to protect our continent’s iconic wildlife, launches on Trace’s TV broadcast channels and streaming platform this weekend, aligned with the network’s 21st anniversary year. A unique celebration of Africa’s music talent and wildlife heritage, a more fitting celebration of Trace’s history and impact over two decades is tough to find.

Produced by Wild Africa, an NPO inspiring the protection of Africa’s wildlife and wild spaces, together with OAS1SONE, a revolutionary music, premium live, on-demand content and live experiences network, Music for Wildlife now sees Africa’s creative talent and natural heritage celebrated on a global stage, reaching more than 350 million people.

Featuring over 150 musicians from across the continent, Music for Wildlife harnesses the emotive power of music to raise awareness and inspire action for wildlife protection. Never has the need been more urgent for relevant, creative ways to help society connect with conservation. Africa, home to a quarter of the world’s biodiversity, faces enormous challenges – from poaching to habitat loss and the illegal wildlife trade to climate change and human-wildlife conflict. Wildlife populations calling the continent home have plunged by 66% in the last 50 years according to WWF’s Living Planet Report.

Africa is not staying silent. From Johannesburg to Lagos, Accra to Windhoek, artists are raising their voices, speaking out against the threats facing wildlife, and inspiring their audiences to connect with their wild spaces in national parks.

Through the intimate concert series, audiences will meet Africa’s finest musicians, including chart-topping stars such as Musa Keys, CKay, Focalistic, Kamo Mphela, Azawi, Vinka, Alyn Sano, Ruti Joel, Sally Boss Madam, Lioness, Feli Nandi, and a multitude of other stars as well as the latest emerging talent, as they tell the story of their music, lives, careers and inspirations, and express their passion for endangered species. Each concert also includes special features from African and international stars from music entertainment, sports, comedy, television, and film like Davido, 2Baba, Jacky Chan, Boity, Alex Iwobi, Stonebwoy, Emmanuella, Yao Ming, Sir Richard Branson, Morgan Heritage, Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Stephanie Linus, Djimon Hounsou, and many others.

Music for Wildlife has changed how I think about myself in relation to the natural world on which we all depend, and my role in shining a light on the things that threaten it. Music is the most powerful connector in the world, and the need to connect with the challenges facing our wildlife, and the potential to protect them, is critical,” says Vinka, multi-award-winning East African singer-songwriter and businesswoman.

Africans should care about protecting wildlife. Wildlife and national parks create a lot of jobs in Africa, such as attracting tourists from across the world. Let’s use music and arts, to protect our amazing wildlife,” noted Focalistic, one of the early pioneers of Amapiano and multi-award-winning rapper, singer, songwriter and global superstar.

Music for Wildlife’s engaging blend of studio sessions, interviews and captivating wildlife content will reach viewers in 180+ countries, across 28 localised Trace TV channels and Trace+ global streaming platform. These performances will air across Trace’s television and streaming platform from the 21st of June onwards aligned with Trace’s 21st Anniversary.

African artists are very powerful voices and can make the difference to raise awareness for better wildlife protection in Africa. Trace is proud to open its global network to host the Music for Wildlife shows that perfectly align with our values and initiatives,” says Olivier Laouchez, Co-founder and Executive Chairman of the Trace Group.

Trace, one of the most powerful global broadcast media networks of African music and content, joins some of the most influential artists and voices in African music entertainment, in partnership with one of the leading conservation communications organisations in the world, to collectively lend their voices for Africa’s future, for its wildlife conservation. We are thrilled to be part of this game-changing partnership, both for the massive audience reach in protecting Africa’s wildlife, but also the unprecedented push this will achieve for Africa’s amazing artists and music, to audiences of millions around the globe,” says Jandre Louw, Founder and CEO of OAS1SONE.

We are excited to partner with Trace in the launch of Music for Wildlife across their varied and far-reaching channels. This collaboration allows us to leverage the power of music to connect with a continent-wide and even global audience, turning up the volume on the issues that affect not only wildlife but the natural foundation on which human life depends,” says Peter Knights, Wild Africa CEO.
