ANAL SEX – A TABOO SUBJECT THAT NEEDS DISCUSSION. Anal Sex is always a highly controversial subject, and the controversy that surrounds it looks to continue for many years to come.

This controversy arises as anal sex may lead to Anal Cancer and has a higher risk of spreading STIs. It is often thought that anal sex is practiced exclusively by gay men.

This is certainly not the case. In absolute numbers more Heterosexual couples have anal sex than Homosexual couples. According to research the Anal area is equipped with many erotic nerve endings in both men and women. So it’s not surprising that many couples derive pleasure from some form of anal stimulation. It is often very painful for both women and men the first few times. A study in the British Medical Journal has shown that young men and women have very different attitudes to anal sex. Young males do it for pleasure or mimicking pornography.

On the other hand females associate anal sex with physical pain and it is something they do unwillingly to please their partners Infections: Anal intercourse carries a high risk of passing HIV, HPV, Hepatitis A and C. The main health risk which affect both Heterosexual and Homosexual couples are:

• Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV).

• Human Papilloma Virus and Warts (HPV) – This virus can be transmitted during anal intercourse and that may lead to anal warts.

• Anal Cancer

• Hepatitis A – This is a viral infection that can cause Jaundice

• Hepatitis C – Fatal chronic Liver Disease. Protection: – (It is safe to practice anal sex with care.)

• The use of condoms and water based lubricants.

• Oil based Lubricants including Vaseline may cause condoms to split. Care is needed for anal sex to be safe and comfortable. Try to keep anal intercourse safe by:

• Ensuring the Anal area is clean.
